Circuitry
The signal path is fully balanced from input to output and uses FETs
exclusively
The Ayre K-3 circuit is a true complementary design using no negative feedback. The
circuit's elegant topology comprises a cascoded differential input stage followed by a
source-follower output stage. This straightforward approach results in remarkable musical
purity. To accomodate a wide variety of signal sources, the gain can be easily adjusted by
changing a single resistor per channel.
Controls
Achieving the maximum performance inherent in balanced circuitry demands
use of stepped attenuators for level controls
The Ayre K-3 utilizes high-quality rotary switches that provide the highest possible
level of sonic quality. These custom-made units employ solid silver contacts for maximum
signal integrity. The level control features thirty-one discrete positions, providing
calibrated 1.5 dB steps over most of its range.
Power Supply
The power supply is housed in a separate enclosure to ensure purity of the
musical signal
Ultra-high-speed rectifiers combine with inductor-input filtering to yield
exceptionally pure DC power. Eight zero-feedback descrete FET regulators are provided, two
for each gain stage in each channel. Our exclusive Ayre
Conditioner assures the cleanest possible power from your AC line.
Logic Functions
Sophisticated circuitry detects power failures as well as low line voltage
conditions, instantly muting the output and placing the preamplifier into the standby mode
The Ayre K-3's functional status is indicated by a unique tri-color LED on the front
panel. When first powered-up, the unit operates in standby mode while the circuitry
stabilizes, indicated by a red display. It then automatically enters into the muted
condition, shown by a green display. When the listener activates the music signal, the
indicator glows a soft blue.
Remote Control
A precision stepper motor operates the level control in accurate,
repeatable increments
The optional remote control is implemented with a commensurate level of attention to
detail. The incoming infrared command generates its own timing signal, assuring absolute
freedom from the high-frequency interference that conventional microprocessor-based
decoders create.
Phono Stage
Phono stage gain or loading is easily adjusted by replacing a single
resistor per channel
Also available is a sophisticated phonograph playback stage. The pure FET circuitry
features a balanced input to extract the maximum performance from the analog source. The
ultra-low-noise design can accommodate virtually all cartridges, from low-output moving
coils to high-output moving magnets. Ayre Reference Series
phono cables are also available, providing a direct link between the phono cartridge and
the balanced input of the preamp.

inputs are required, Ayre also offers ultra-high quality RCA-XLR
adapters. The front-panel input lables may be customized by the listener for their

provided, allowing for maximum flexibility in any installation.
