The Ayre K-1 preamplifier is a breakthrough product that
redefines the boundaries of high-performance audio design. By taking a clean-slate
approach, Ayre has created a unique component that sets a new standard into the next
millenium.
Direct-Path Technology
The placement of each component is optimized for direct signal flow
The
focal point of the K-1's design is Ayre's revolutionary Direct-Path Technology (TM). By
simplifying both the circuitry and the physical signal path, resolution and clarity are
maximized. The entire line stage, including every connector and control, is directly
soldered to a single circuit board mounted parallel to the rear panel of the chassis. A
unique system of precision timing belts synchronizes the individual sections of each
control. Surface-mount technology allows for the miniaturization of the circuit layout.
The net result is that all circuitry, from input to output, is contained within six
inches!
Circuitry
The signal path is fully balanced from input to output and uses FETs
exclusively
The Ayre K-1 circuit is a true complementary design using no negative feedback. The
signal path is fully balanced from input to output and uses FETs exclusively. The
circuit's elegant topology comprises a cascoded differential input stage followed by a
source-follower output stage. This straightforward approach results in remarkable musical
purity. To accommodate a wide variety of signal sources, the gain can be easily adjusted
by changing a single resistor per channel.
Controls
Achieving the maximum performance inherent in balanced circuitry demands
use of stepped attenuators for level controls
The Ayre K-1 utilizes Shallco rotary switches that provide the highest possible level
of sonic quality. These custom-made units employ solid silver contacts and wipers for
maximum signal integrity. Built to military standards, their self-cleaning action assures
a lifetime of performance. For utmost ergonomic function, the level control features
forty-six discrete positions, providing calibrated 1.0 dB steps over virtually its entire
range.
Power Supply
The power supply is housed in a separate enclosure to ensure purity of the
musical signal
Schottky high-speed rectifiers combine with inductor-input filtering to yield
exceptionally pure DC power. Discrete FET master regulators are located in the external
power supply enclosure. In addition, each amplification stage in each channel is provided
with its own discrete FET regulator, also of a zero-feedback design. Our exclusive Ayre Conditioner assures the cleanest possible power from your
AC line.
Logic Functions
Sophisticated circuitry detects power failures as well as low line voltage
conditions, instantly muting the output and placing the preamplifier into the standby mode
The Ayre K-1's functional status is indicated by a unique tri-color LED on the front
panel. When first powered-up, the unit operates in standby mode while the circuitry
stabilizes, indicated by a red display. It then automatically enters into the muted
condition, shown by a green display. When the listener activates the music signal, the
indicator glows a soft blue. Sophisticated circuitry detects power failures as well as low
line voltage conditions, instantly muting the output and placing the preamplifier into the
standby mode.
Remote Control
A precision stepper motor operates the level control in accurate,
repeatable increments
The optional remote control is implemented with a commensurate level of attention to
detail. The incoming infrared command is used to generate its own decoding signal,
assuring absolute freedom from internally generated high-frequency interference.
Phono Stage
Gain is easily adjusted by replacing a single resistor per channel
Also available is a sophisticated phonograph playback stage. Using the same technology
employed in the line stage, the pure FET circuitry features a balanced input to extract
the maximum performance from the analog source. The ultra-low-noise design can accommodate
virtually all cartridges, from low-output moving coils to high-output moving magnets. Ayre Reference Series phono cables are also available,
providing a direct link between the phono cartridge and the balanced input of the preamp.
Features
The Ayre K-1 is truly the milestone by which all other designs will be
judged
The Ayre K-1 offers three balanced inputs and three unbalanced inputs. If additional
unbalanced inputs are required, Ayre also offers ultra-high quality RCA-XLR adapters. The input labels are customized by the
listener for their particular system, simplifying operation. Two balanced outputs and one
unbalanced output are provided, allowing for maximum flexibility in any installation.
